Porto Novo, Jan 09 (Inforpress) – Farmers in Martiene, in the municipality of Porto Novo, on Santo Antão island, complained today about the high cost of irrigation water and called for the operation of the photovoltaic system installed at the local borehole.
Farmers’ spokesperson Amandy Fortes told Inforpress that producers pay between 40 and 50 escudos per cubic metre of water, a price they consider “very high given the means” of this group.
He added that the price of irrigation water in Martiene “has become unbearable for farmers,” many of whom are unable to expand their activity as desired “due to the exorbitant cost of water.”
The same source reported that the photovoltaic system installed at the local borehole has been inoperative for four years, a situation that has contributed to rising water costs.
