Praia City, Dec 23 (Inforpress) – Cape Verdean writer António Júlio Timas launches today, in Praia, the book “Pau, Mar e Céu to New Bedford,” a work inspired by family memories and experiences from São Nicolau, linked to emigration and whaling in the United States.
In statements to Inforpress, the author explained that the inspiration for the book arose from stories passed down orally by his ancestors, with special emphasis on his paternal grandfather, one of the Cape Verdean whalers who emigrated to the United States aboard traditional wooden boats.
“The work is dedicated to my paternal grandfather, who was one of the whalers who left for the United States. These stories have always moved me and have accompanied me since childhood,” he said.
According to the writer, the book stems from a concern about the gradual loss of the cultural memory of São Nicolau, an island he considers rich in traditions, stories and unique experiences.
