Santa Cruz: Unseasonal Rains Renew Fields but Poilão Dam Remains at Critical Level

Pedra Badejo, 09 Dec (Inforpress) – Unseasonal rains in November and early December have revived agricultural fields in Santa Cruz, but the Poilão Dam failed to receive sufficient water, leaving farmers concerned about supply in the coming months.

Despite heavy rainfall in parts of Santa Cruz, the municipality has no dam of its own and depends almost entirely on Poilão Dam in São Lourenço dos Órgãos, where rainfall was scarce.

Farmer Carlos Tavares explained that the lack of run off in the stream feeding the dam has forced farmers in Ribeira Seca to rely solely on reserves accumulated in previous years, whose durability is uncertain.

There is concern that if water levels drop significantly, supply will not be enough to sustain crops until the next agricultural season.
