Sal Rei, 03 Nov (Inforpress) – The Turtle Foundation and partners today launched specialised training in Boa Vista to build capacity for the correct intervention and re-floatation of stranded cetaceans, whales and dolphins, and to equip the island with rescue equipment.
The training runs until Friday the 7th, and is being held in partnership with Project Biodiversity.
It will involve 36 participants, including “key field actors” from environmental organisations such as BIOS.CV, Cabo Verde Natura, as well as Fire Service personnel, Maritime Police and representatives of the Ministry of Environment.
According to the Turtle Foundation’s volunteer coordinator, Sara Vieira, the initiative was motivated by several cetacean stranding incidents, with over 70 recorded in Boa Vista since 2000, and by the lack of equipment for re-floatation, meaning the process of correctly returning the animals to the water.
