São Vicente: Work at Praça Nova halted over legal requirements and failure to request mandatory opinion – IPC

Mindelo, 2 October (Inforpress) – The president of the Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC) stated today that the suspension of work on Praça Nova in São Vicente is due to a legal requirement and the fact that the city council had not requested an opinion.

Speaking to Inforpress, Ana Samira Silva explained that Praça Nova forms part of Mindelo’s Historic Centre, which has been designated a National Heritage Site since 2012; consequently, any development in a designated area requires a binding opinion from the IPC.

According to the official, the IPC became aware of the works once they were already underway and contacted City Council of São Vicente Municipal to obtain information about the project and draw attention to the site’s heritage significance.

“As the city council had not requested this opinion, and the IPC, upon learning that the works were underway, contacted the city council to ask for information about what was being done,” She said.
