Praia, 1 October (Inforpress) – The Santiago Sul Regional Open Individual Chess Championship gets underway on Friday 3rd in Praia and runs until Sunday 3rd, with 12 chess players expected to take part, according to Amílcar Monteiro, president of the region’s chess association.
The competition, which will take place at the Citizens’ Hall at City Council of Praia, is part of the national calendar of official competitions of the Cape Verdean Chess Federation (FCX) and will determine the regional champion who will qualify for the 2026 National Individual Absolute Chess Championship, scheduled for December.
According to Amílcar Monteiro, speaking to Inforpress, the term ‘open individual’ means that the competition is not restricted to a specific category and may include male, female, senior or other categories of chess players.
“This is part of a national calendar of official tournaments, and therefore organised by the federation,” explained the president of the Southern Santiago Regional Chess Association (ARXSS), who added that the winner automatically qualifies for the national stage.
