São Filipe, 29 September (Inforpress) – The establishment of a commercial air route between Sal and Fogo should make it easier for the diaspora to travel between the two islands and attract tourists visiting Sal and Boa Vista, announced the mayor of São Filipe.
According to Nuías Silva, the proposal submitted to the Secretary of State for Tourism, José Pimenta Lima, is intended to be an innovation because previously there was no commercial route, only charter flights which, as they did not allow visitors to stay, did not generate sufficient added value for Fogo as a destination.
“We did not have a Sal–São Filipe route that served Fogo’s tourism interests,” Nuías Silva said, explaining that the charter flight arrived and departed on the same day, leaving tourists with no opportunity to stay overnight on the island.
He argued that establishing a regular commercial link between Sal and São Filipe could benefit both the diaspora and tourism, by capitalising on the existing connection between Providence, in the United States of America, and Sal.
