Carlos Alberto Tavares calls for better wages and labour inspections to retain the workforce in the construction industry

Praia, 1 September (Inforpress) – The Minister for Infrastructure, Housing and Spatial Planning today called for improvements to wages, working conditions and the timely payment of workers as measures to retain the workforce in the construction sector.

Speaking to the press following the opening of the Sectoral Council for the Validation of Professional Qualifications in the Construction and Civil Engineering sector, the minister acknowledged that retaining the workforce is one of the challenges facing the sector, at a time when many professionals are seeking opportunities abroad.

“We must not only provide training, but also improve working conditions and pay, in order to retain young people in Cape Verde,” he said. 

Carlos Alberto Tavares argued that companies should take greater responsibility for valuing their workers, given that wages should be commensurate with the scale of the projects undertaken.
