Turtles/Fogo: Rise in captures causes concern for the Projecto Vitó Association

São Filipe, 26 August (Inforpress) – The rise in the number of turtle captures this season is a cause for concern amongst officials at the Projecto Vitó Association, which runs a turtle conservation campaign on the nesting beaches of Fogo Island and Ilhéus Rombos.

In a post on their social media page, following a meeting with beach lifeguards to assess progress and discuss the challenges, the organisers of the Vitó Project have highlighted an increase in the number of turtles being caught this season.

This situation is regarded as a cause for concern by the same source, and it reinforces the need to maintain and step up surveillance on beaches, as well as awareness-raising initiatives within local communities.

According to the association’s representatives, every turtle caught represents the loss of an animal that may take decades to reach sexual maturity and return to the beaches to breed.
