Brazilian journalist seeks an explanation in Cabo Verde for the ‘Tubarões Azuis phenomenon’

Praia, 25 August (Inforpress) – Brazilian journalist Ricardo Setyon, who has covered 11 World Cups, is in Cabo Verde to investigate the Tubarões Azuis phenomenon, work on a book and develop projects to foster sporting ties between Cabo Verde and Brazil.

Setyon arrived in the country driven by a question which, he admits, he has not yet been able to answer: how did a national team from a small country, with players little known internationally and without a structured professional league, manage to surprise the world at the 2026 World Cup?

The journalist attended all four of Cabo Verde’s matches in the competition in person and says that, in every match, the results defied his own predictions.

The national team’s performance eventually led him to step away from his usual role as a journalist to join in the celebrations with the Cape Verdean fans.
