PR questions whether resolution regarding Amadeu Oliveira's detention applies to pre-trial detention

Praia City, August 19 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, stated today that he has decided to raise with the Constitutional Court only the question of whether the National Assembly's resolution regarding the detention of Amadeu Oliveira also applies to pre-trial detention.

The head of state explained that the decision came in response to a petition signed by approximately 500 citizens, who requested that several cases related to the former deputy of the Cape Verdean Union for Independence and Democracy (UCID - opposition), Amadeu Oliveira, be sent for abstract and subsequent review by the Constitution.

José Maria Neves made these remarks in an interview with Radio Cabo Verde (RCV).

According to the President of the Republic, after analysing the issues raised “with the utmost rigour”, he decided to raise only the question of whether the part of the National Assembly’s resolution concerning the detention of Amadeu Oliveira might also cover pre-trial detention.
