Researcher advocates the reuse of treated wastewater as a viable and environmentally sustainable solution

Praia, August 19 (Inforpress) – University professor and researcher Maria dos Anjos Lopes stated today that the reuse of treated wastewater is a technically viable and environmentally sustainable solution for Cabo Verde as an island nation.

In an interview with Inforpress, Maria dos Anjos Lopes assured that this approach allows transforming a "byproduct of the sanitation system" into a resource with the potential to meet different needs, while simultaneously contributing to environmental protection, water security, and sustainable development.

As that researcher pointed out, whilst this principle fits within the framework of the circular economy and integrated water resource management, she nevertheless stressed that it is essential to make a distinction: “Not all wastewater should be reused for any purpose. The principle must be to ensure that the quality of the treated water is appropriate for its intended use”.

"From a technical point of view, wastewater can be used for irrigating urban green spaces, in agriculture, for artificial aquifer recharge, and in certain industrial processes, provided that it undergoes appropriate treatment and meets the requirements established by health and environmental regulations," he noted.
