CAN 2026: National team coach attributes defeat to Ghana to nerves and anxiety in the opening match

Praia, 30 July (Inforpress) – The women’s national football coach, Silvéria Nédio, cited nervousness and anxiety ahead of Cabo Verde’s debut in the African Nations Championship (CAN) as decisive factors in the 2–0 defeat to Ghana in Casablanca.

In statements released by the Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF), the coach acknowledged the significance of the occasion and the superiority of the experienced Ghanaian side, whilst praising the team’s attitude and commitment throughout the 90 minutes.

‘It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I’d like to highlight the players’ excellent attitude on the playing field. Ghana are a very strong side and we gave it our all. We conceded two goals due to moments of lack of concentration, but that’s all part of football,’ she said.

When asked about the absence of two key players, including captain Vincênia and striker Érica, the trainer admitted that the situation had affected the squad, particularly as it was only confirmed the day before the match that they would be unavailable.
