National Assembly election brings country closer to parity, but ICIEG warns about gender balance

Praia, 19 June (Inforpress) - The historic election of Janira Hopffer Almada as President of the National Assembly represents "a milestone in promoting gender equality," but it also brings warnings about political representation balance, said ICIEG’s president.

In statements to Inforpress, the president of the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG), Marisa Carvalho, who congratulated the parliament on the "robust sign of progress", called for "greater vigilance to avoid new imbalances", reinforcing the continuing need for the Parity Law.

"The institute sees this election as a confirmation of the advances in promoting gender equality in the country," he said, highlighting the individual path of the new president of the National Assembly, Janira Hopffer Almada, in advocacy and politics.

On the issue of leadership, she also referred to her pioneering as the first woman to lead a political party in Cabo Verde, as well as Filomena Martins, who had occupied the presidency of the MpD, albeit for a very short period.
