Revision of the Civil Code must be focused on the Cape Verdean reality – coordinator

Cidade da Praia, 12 June (Inforpress) – The coordinator of the Commission for the Revision of the Cape Verdean Civil Code stated today that the ongoing reform aims to bring the legislation into line with the national reality, noting that current civil law still reflects influences inherited from the colonial period.

Geraldo Almeida was speaking to the press after delivering the work carried out to date by the aforementioned Commission to the Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa.

According to the coordinator, one of the team's main objectives has been to reconstruct Cape Verdean legal history, a field that, in his view, has never been properly studied systematically.

“The work we have been doing is aimed at reconstructing this documentation and establishing what Cape Verdean law actually is. Because what we have found throughout this research is that, in fact, the law we have been teaching is not Cape Verdean law, but Portuguese law,” he said.
