
Porto Novo, May 28 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde will submit the island of Santo Antão as a candidate for the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), a process receiving technical and financial support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The assurance was given on Wednesday the 27th by FAO, which explained that Cabo Verde’s GIAHS candidacy is being prepared as part of “Terras Vivas” project, with the work plan for Santo Antão’s application currently in the preparation phase.
According to an FAO statement, Santo Antão island is characterised by Atlantic terraced farming systems, with rain-fed crops such as maize and beans, and irrigated crops including sugar cane, bananas, fruits, tubers and vegetables.
“With FAO’s technical and financial support and within the framework of the ‘Terras Vivas’ project, the work plan for Santo Antão’s candidacy is being prepared and will be further developed during this week,” the same source added.
