Praia, 15 Sep (Inforpress) – The national director of health, Jorge Noel Barreto, defended the need for Cabo Verde to have a National Health System capable for ensuring quality health care for the elderly.
Jorge Noel Barreto made these statements during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Congress of Active and Healthy Aging framed in the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Active Aging and Health of the Elderly 2017-2021 (PENEASI) and the implementation of the Agreement of Integrated Health Care of the Elderly 2018-2030, which runs from September 14 to 17, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago.
Addressing the situation of the elderly in Cabo Verde in the COVID-19 context, this responsible pointed out that, at this time, about 4.280 people aged 60 years or older were diagnosed with COVID-19, which represents 12% of the total cases already reported in the country.
He regretted the fact that there are more deaths due to COVID-19 in this age group, stressing that the lethality rate in this age group is 5.9%, while the overall lethality rate is 0.88%.
