COVID-19 / Sal Island: World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought passing by without special attention because of the pandemic

Espargos, Jun 18 (Inforpress) – The City Hall of Sal councilor for the environment said that this year there was no program for the World Day to Combat Desertification, celebrated Wednesday, because the focus is on COVID-19 .

Victor Cardoso was speaking to Inforpress about the event, at a time when the island is experiencing a situation of community transmission of COVID-19, recording active cases in growth.

The councilor highlights the continuation of the annual project, “Adopt a tree”, which has supported the citizens interested in the beautification and creation of their green spaces in their homes, with donation of plants, plant seedlings, produced in the Municipal Nursery, in Terra Boa.

According to experts in the matter, talking about combating desertification is talking about restoring degraded ecosystems, conserving natural resources and fighting food insecurity. And in Cabo Verde, in particular, a small archipelago in the Sahel sub-region, it is talking about a “tenacious and persistent struggle against adverse circumstances”.
