Mindelo, April 12 (Inforpress) – The archipelago of Cape Verde is among the African island countries that have made the most progress in the development of the blue economy, according to biologist José Guerreiro who has been carrying out a study with IMar for about six years.
The biologist, who holds a PhD in Ecology and Biosystematics and is a professor with aggregation in Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), presented this conclusion to the press on the sidelines of a lecture presented today at the Oceanographic Center of Mindelo, on the theme “State of the art of governance, maritime spatial planning, and blue economy in Africa, from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean.”
According to the same source, this work has been developed for about six years with Cape Verde, particularly with the Institute of the Sea (IMar), and in which the blue economy models of African countries were compared with case studies of 12 countries, including small African island states.
“And also which governance and maritime spatial planning models are necessary to develop and adapt in each country to have the best effectiveness for the development of the blue economy, which generates an increase in Gross Domestic Product and creates jobs,” explained the same source, adding that eight million new jobs are expected in Africa by 2030 in the maritime sector.
