Praia, Jul 19 ( Inforpress) – The Minister of Sport considered on Monday in Cairo, Egypt, that the second place won by the men’s handball team at the African Handball Championship (CAN 2022) represents a “great step” for the affirmation of Cabo Verdean sport in Africa.
“We will continue to work, today we have taken a big step towards affirming our sport in Africa,” said Carlos Monteiro, after the 37-25 defeat to Egypt in the final game played at Cairo’s International Hall, which crowned Cabo Verde the second place.
Cabo Verde reached the final of the competition after winning second place in Group C behind Tunisia, having beaten Nigeria (35-29) and lost to the Tunisians (24-30). In the quarter-finals Cabo Verde beat Angola (24-23) and in the semifinals left Morocco (23-19).
The national team of Egypt thus revalidates the title they won in 2020 and won its eighth African title, two less than Tunisia, the continent’s most title-winning team CAN 2022 from 11 to 18 July , with 14 African national team. The top five finishers (Egypt, Cabo Verde, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria) qualified for the 2023 World Cup, will be played in Poland from January 12 to 29, 2023.
