Cabo Verdean workers look forward to a national demonstration in January next year – Trade union

Praia, Dec 5 (Inforpress) – A group of 12 national unions decided to set up a nationwide demonstration for January 2020 to claim the promises made by the Government and express dissatisfaction with the socio-labour and political union situation in the country.

Among other things, this decision is part of the list of measures that emerged from the meeting held on November 23 in São Vicente with 12 national trade unionists, linked in particular to the Union of Workers of Financial Institutions (STIF), Industry, Services, Trade Union , Agriculture and Fisheries (SISCAP) and National Teachers Union (SINDEP) of Santiago, Transport, Communications and Public Administration Union (SINTCAP) and Sal Industry, Trade and Tourism Union (SICOTUR), with main point in the agenda the socio-employment situation of the country and definition of a strategy for UNTC-CS “rescue”.

During a press conference in Praia, the representative of the trade unionists, Eliseu Tavares said that the demonstration could take place on 13 or 20 January, taking into account that these are milestones and may, therefore, be a factor of greater people, but stressed that these dates will still be agreed with other partners and unions.

According to trade unionists, the country is going through a troubled moment with a climate of fear in the workplace, high youth unemployment, wage freeze in all sectors of activity with consequent reduction in the purchasing power of workers, excess of delays in labour justice, poor functioning of the Inspectorate General of Labour (IGT) and the Directorate General of Labour (DGT) and reduction of social security rights.
