Praia, April 21 (Inforpress) – The president of the National Teachers’ Union (SINDEP) believes that teachers have no great reasons for celebrations on the Cabo Verdean Teacher’s Day, reiterating that the struggle will continue to safeguard and guarantee the gains achieved.
In statement to Inforpress, as part of the Cabo Verdean Teacher’s Day, on April 23rd, Nicolau Furtado stressed that the problems faced by these professionals have persisted over the years, such as precarious contracts, reclassifications and allowance for non-reduction of workload.
“The teachers’ situation at the moment does not give great reasons for celebrations. Therefore, the Cabo Verdean Teacher’s Day should also be a reflection,” he said, indicating that SINDEP, which has more than 4.000 associates nationwide, will hold this Friday, 21st, at the Abilio Duarte High School, in Palmarejo, Praia City, a meeting for reflection.
Regarding teachers’ concerns, Nicolau Furtado explained that at the moment there are about a hundred teachers who have specific qualifications for teaching, but with precarious contracts and who are appointed to other island different of their residence, causing sometimes “lack of money” to return, as well as they are always uncertain if will continue in the job or not in the next school year.
