Cabo Verde has already sent FIBA Africa its request for a wild card for the Afrobasket 2017

Praia, April 19 (Inforpress) – The Cabo Verdean Federation of Basketball (FCBB) has asked FIBA Africa for a wild-card for the national senior male team to participate in the Afrobasket 2017, which takes place from August 16 to 30 in Congo Brazzaville.

The information was revealed by FCBB vice-president Rodrigo Mascarenhas in statements to RCV, explaining that Cabo Verde presents as an argument to convince FIBA Africa that Cabo Verdean international Edy “Walter” Tavares is representing the Cleveland Cavaliers Club, champion of the NBA, considered the biggest league of professional basketball of the world.

For Mascarenhas, this could be a very strong asset, because the fact that Edy Tavares is playing alongside players like Lebron James, referred to as one of the best basketball players in the world today, could influence FIBA Africa that in his view “will have every interest of enriching the African competition with players of the greater showcase”.

The FIBA Africa decision will only be known in May on the occasion of the draw of the Afrobasket 2017, at the time the organization will choose the two countries to complete the group of teams qualified for this continental competition.

Cabo Verde lost direct access to Afrobasket 2017 when it qualified in third place in the quadrangular tournament held in March in Senegal and Mali, the two hosts that was qualified.
