Cabo Verde Business Association calls for approval of lay-off extension law

Espargos, Aug 5 (Inforpress) – The Cabo Verde Business Association is calling for the approval of the lay-off extension law which ended on June 30, mentioning that some employees already require employers to pay 100 percent of July’s wage.

“As always, the law is published weeks late and with retroactive effect, with consequences for the payments of workers who will receive the subsidies and wage of July in September”, said the president of Cabo Verde Empresas, Andrea Benolli, according to him bars and restaurants have been closed for months due to lack of customers, but continue to support workers through lay-off.

“Creating more debt with the banks in the hope to have soon a recovery which depends very much on Cabo Verde and little, very little on Europe,” he said, noting that some employees, “tired of this situation”, already ask employers to pay 100 percent of wages for July, since, according to the law, they are no longer covered by the lay-off, given the non-extension of the scheme.

“This means more headaches for entrepreneurs in these economic activities, which could be quickly avoided with proper programming, and if the opinions of private sector representatives had been taken into account,” he said.
